Today it’s increasingly important that companies have both a strategy and a program to develop talent. This isn’t just a nice-to-have: it’s a valuable device for recruiting and retaining the best people in an increasingly competitive employee-led world.
A new manager, a new team and a new company all face the same issue of needing to step up and develop new skills to get the work done in the best possible way in the least amount of time.
I offer a range of tools that are designed to accelerate the growth and development of both new managers and new teams. Each person and situation is unique, so I start with a simple evaluation to assess what the current capabilities are and identify the skills that are most needed to move forward. From there you get to choose from a menu of workshops, tutorials and 1-2-1 coaching which are tailored for the individual or team with clear outcomes and timelines agreed in advance.
“Michael demystified my business by speaking to each of my employees and applying his considerable knowledge and insight to how we could improve the way we communicate. We are a much closer team as a result now, and I am a much better manager because of it.”

Founder / CEO, Pick My Postcode and Find Out Now
While I embed very specific leadership skills, I do not run a lengthy leadership programme. I bring over 30 years of experience in Television, Production and Media to situations that are causing frustration or difficulty. Together we explore different ways to improve the outcomes. Sometime a classic coaching style is most appropriate for real learning and insights to emerge, but other times it’s quicker to deliver practical training to build specific skills that can be tried out the next day. One size does not fit all, and one approach isn’t always the best.
There are three main development routes:

Compact Management Training Modules
These are short bursts of training to give team leaders the tools they need to step up in their role as and when they need it. All the tutorials stand alone, pitched at the appropriate level of the person, exploring their own real situations. Delivered in 2-hour blocks (either in person or remotely), they come with a Training Manual handout, and a follow up conversation within a week to evaluate actions and learnings. The tutorial topics include:
- Giving Great Feedback
- Effective Delegation
- Building Influence
- Setting Objectives
- Running Productive Meetings
- Overcoming Procrastination
- Better Recruitment
- Coming Up With New Ideas
- Selling Ideas
- Presentation Skills
- Adaptive Management Styles
- Listening Skills

- Implementing Change
"Michael is an effective sounding board for me to focus on my goals and to prioritize my tasks. He encourages me to weigh up different perspectives so that I feel more confident addressing an issue with the right solutions.”

Team Building Tools
Whether it’s a new team or an established team working on a new project, it can take time to settle into a cohesive unit. I can accelerate that process to deliver a high performing team. We will quickly self-evaluate the way things are working now and how everyone can improve that, identifying jeopardies in advance with collaborative strategies to address them early on. We will focus on the three core communications skills; Thinking, Speaking and Listening and agree some ground rules so everyone’s not trying to do all three at the same time. Other skills we can focus on include:
Clarifying Roles and Inter-dependencies
Building Trust
Conflict Resolution
Ideas Management
Team Goals and Priorities
Team Manifesto (What we Do, Why we Do It, How we do it)

“From our very first meeting it was clear that Michael had an understanding of the business challenges of modern media organisations facing disruptive change. Michael’s collaborative but challenging approach worked well with the team. He is a natural facilitator – allowing the team to own actions, remain accountable and always ensured that business objectives were at the forefront of the work”.
